THIS ALTERNATIVE PLAN IS DESIGNED BY PEOPLE WITH YEARS OF EXPERIENCE IN PUBLIC TRANSPORT BOTH STUDYING AND WORKING ON THE GROUND. WE DON'T CLAIM TO HAVE ALL THE ANSWERS AS NOBODY HAS A MONOPOLY ON IDEAS. A COMBINATION OF BOTH PLANS COULD BE A SOLUTION. WE WOULD LIKE TO HEAR YOUR VIEWS. THE CIRCLE TRANSPORT PLAN HAS BEEN AROUND SINCE 1990 WHEN WE DISCOVERED THE MAJOR FLAWS IN PUBLIC TRANSPORT WITH ONE-SIDED MEDIA COVERAGE - ALL FOR TRANSPORT 21. THE LAYOUT OF DUBLIN IS IDEAL FOR A TRANSPORT SOLUTION. THE ABUNDANCE OF EXISTING TRANSPORT FACILITIES, THE LOCATION OF ITS MAIN LAND BELT MAKES A SOLUTION VERY SIMPLE AND INEXPENSIVE. PUBLIC TRANSPORT ALL OVER THE WORLD IS VERY EXPENSIVE TO OPERATE AND HAS TO BE HEAVILY SUBSIDISED BECAUSE OF ONE MAJOR FLAW - THE RADIAL SYSTEM - MAINLY VIA THE CENTRE. TEN MAJOR FLAWS IN PUBLIC TRANSPORT

THE THREE MAIN COMPONENTS THAT MAKE UP A SOLUTION ARE BUS-RAIL-AND LUAS, ALONG WITH LAND USE AND TECHNOLOGY. WALKING, CYCLING AND 'THE TAXI' ALSO PLAY A MAJOR ROLE. THE MOVING VEHICLE ALSO HAS ITS PLACE. SUSTAINABILITY IS AN IMPORTANT ELEMENT IN ANY SOLUTION. ALL AREAS MUST SEEK THIS AND AVOID UNNECESSARY MOVEMENTS TO THE CITY CENTRE. DUBLIN HAS A VERY SMALL CENTRE THAT IS NEEDED FOR TOURISM GROWTH OVER THE NEXT CENTURY. WE ALSO TAKE INTO ACCOUNT THE CHANGES THAT TOOK PLACE OVER THE LAST TWO DECADES, PARTICULARLY THE LARGE MOVEMENT OF PEOPLE TO THE COUNTRYSIDE UP TO A RADIUS ON AVERAGE OF FIFTY MILES. WE ALSO TOOK INTO ACCOUNT FUTURE POPULATION GROWTH AND CLIMATE EFFECTS FROM VARIOUS REPORTS. WE CANNOT CONCENTRATE ON A VERY SMALL AREA OF DUBLIN BECAUSE THE REST OF THE COUNTRY WILL LOSE OUT MAKING THE PROBLEMS WORSE AND DELAYING A FINAL TRANSPORT SOLUTION.

 

ANY PLAN, LIKE BUILDING A HOUSE, CAR, OR COMPUTER, MUST DISPLAY THE FULL PLAN AT THE BEGINNING OTHERWISE IT IS PIECEMEAL PLANNING OR ISOLATED PLANNING, WHICH IS THE SCOURGE OF SOCIETY. EFFICIENCY AND COST ARE VERY IMPORTANT ELEMENTS IN ANY SOLUTION AND MORE SO WHEN OUR GREAT COUNTRY IS IN SUCH ECONOMIC DIFFICULTIES. INTEGRATION IS ALSO VITAL IN ANY SOLUTION IN THAT THE SOLUTIONS MUST BE POSITIVE AND KEEPING IN WITH THE PRINCIPLE OF MOVEMENT THAT IS DIRECT OR THE SHORTEST ROUTE. THE MOST IMPORTANT ELEMENT OF ALL IS THE USER. WITH SO MANY RULES AND REGULATIONS, PARTICULARLY IN HEALTH AND SAFETY, BUILDING THE UNDERGROUND BECOMES VERY EXPENSIVE INDEED. COSTS CAN BE REDUCED BY UP TO TENFOLD IF THE UNDERGROUND IS AVOIDED AND THE DIRECT OPTION USED IN THE PLAN. IT IS VERY DIFFICULT TO IGNORE THIS POINT IN THE PRESENT ECONOMIC DIFFICULTIES.

THIS SOLUTION REQUIRES JUST THREE LINK-UPS:

A; THE MISSING LINK FROM CONNOLLY TO DOCKLAND STATION - JUST ONE KILOMETRE - CREATING THE GREATEST RAIL HUB IN ANY SYSTEM.

B; THE SHORT LINK FROM ADAMSTOWN TO LEIXLIP - JUST THREE MILES. THE TAKES THE PRESSURE OFF THE OVERWHELMED BLANCHARDSTOWN LINE AS SLIGO AND BLANCHARDSTOWN LINES CAN COME IN ON THE KILDARE FOUR LINES.  

C; THE VITAL LINK FROM CLONSILLA (SLIGO) LINE TO JOIN NORTHERN LINE AT DONABATE. THIS GIVES DIRECT OPTIONS TO DUBLIN AIRPORT FROM ALL PARTS OF THE COUNTRY. THIS IS ALSO VITAL FOR FUTURE RAIL EXTENSION AND EXPANSION AND AVOIDS UNNECESSARY USE OF SCARCE CAPACITY TO THE CITY CENTRE. STANDARD RAIL GAUGE ESSENTIAL TO AVOID DUPLICATION AND TO MAXIMIZE RAIL USAGE USING OUR THREE AND ONE SYSTEM. BY THE WAY, METRO ACTUALLY STOPS THIS!!!  

FLAWS
 
THE FLAWS CAUSED BY THE RADIAL SYSTEM, IF NOT ADDRESSED, WILL MAKE THIS SYSTEM ALMOST USELESS. THE METRO NORTH, METRO WEST AND THE 'INTERCONNECTOR' WILL REDUCE CAR NUMBERS BY LESS THAN TWO PER CENT BECAUSE OF NULLIFICATION AND THE OTHER PROBLEMS. THE LOCATION OF METRO WEST IS IN THE ONLY ONE AREA WHERE BUS ORBITAL HAS GREAT POTENTIAL.
THE BUS NEEDS  THIS ORBITAL TO ADDRESS THE MAJOR LOSSES DUE TO THE RADIAL SYSTEM. IT WOULD ALSO UNDERMINE THE MAINLINE ORBITAL RAIL LINK UP. IT ONLY SERVES SHOPPING CENTRES WHERE CAR IS KING AND MISSES OUT THE VERY IMPORTANT LAND BANK POTENTIAL OF THE INDUSTRIAL CORRIDOR. IT WILL DELAY THE THE HIGHLY POPULATED BLANCHARDSTOWN   AREA FOR MANY DECADES OF GETTING A LUAS LINE DIRECT TO THE CITY. THE POTENTIAL OF METRO WEST IN THIS LOCATION IS VERY WEAK WITH VERY LITTLE BENEFIT TO LOCAL AREAS. TRANSPORT SYSTEMS SHOULD NOT UNDERMINE EACH OTHER.
 
THE PROMOTERS OF TRANSPORT 21 DO NOT SEEM TO BE AWARE OF THE RECESSION OR NOT AFFECTED BY IT YET. THE MAIN PROMOTERS OF THIS PLAN ARE THE SAME PEOPLE THAT PROMOTED THE PROPERTY BOOM AND REMAINED SILENT WHILST SO MUCH DAMAGE WAS BEING DONE. WE ARE IN A TIME OF WASTE AND THESE SAME PEOPLE DON'T SEE ANYTHING WRONG WITH WASTE!!
 
BY BUILDING AN INTERCONNECTOR THAT WILL TAKE ONLY ONE TYPE OF TRAIN IGNORES THE FACT THAT THERE IS A RAIL TUNNEL THROUGH THE PHOENIX PARK THAT CAN TAKE ALL TYPES OF TRAINS. THIS UNDERMINES EFFICIENCY AND SO FORTH.
 
COSTS  
THE ALTERNATIVE PLAN WE PROPOSE WILL COST JUST OVER ONE TENTH THE COST OF TRANSPORT 21, COVERING THE SAME AREA OR HALF THE COST OF T21 FOR ALL OF DUBLIN. THIS IS ACHIEVED BY AVOIDING:-
  • COSTLY UNDERGROUND,
  •  BY ADDRESSING THE MAIN FLAWS IN PUBLIC TRANSPORT, 
  • BY MAXIMIZING LAND USE WITH THE AID OF TECHNOLOGY
  • BY AVOIDING MAJOR STREET DISRUPTIONS
  • BY NOT HAVING TOO MANY LINES IN THE SMALL CITY CENTRE AREA
  • AND BY ACHIEVING NEAR MAXIMUM EFFICIENCY WITH OUR PLAN.
THOSE WHO GOT US INTO THIS MESS ARE NOW CLUTCHING AT STRAWS TO JUSTIFY GOING AHEAD WITH METRO. WITH THE COUNTRY IN SUCH DEBT AND A NUMBER OF HARD BUDGETS DUE OVER THE NEXT FEW YEARS, TAKING A GAMBLE WITH METRO UNDER THESE CIRCUMSTANCES IS VERY IRRESPONSIBLE. THE LUAS IS SUCCESSFUL BUT IT HAS NOT ADDRESSED THE FLAWS IN PUBLIC TRANSPORT. IS ADMITTING THEY WERE WRONG TOO HIGH A PRICE TO PAY TO SAVE THE STATE? WHO CAN WE TRUST?
 
THE MOST SENSIBLE WAY TO ADDRESS THIS MAJOR DECISION IS TO COMPARE THE TWO OPTIONS BEING PUT FORWARD, AS GETTING IT WRONG A SECOND TIME WOULD BE DISASTROUS. THERE IS NO GUARANTEE THAT WITH THE METRO JOBS WILL FOLLOW OR SOLVE OUR PROBLEMS. WE DON'T THINK ANYONE HAS ALL THE ANSWERS EVEN AFTER LISTENING TO THE SOLUTIONS PUT FORWARD BY EXPERTS PAST AND PRESENT.
 
THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS A "FREE LUNCH". LOOK AT HOW MUCH THE WEST-LINK TOLL BRIDGE IS COSTING US NOW. THERE ARE NOW A NUMBER OF PEOPLE PROMOTING THE IDEA THAT WHAT WE PAY NOW WE CAN MAKE UP FOR LATER. AS WE KNOW NOW FROM BITTER EXPERIENCE, SOME PEOPLE DON'T MIND WASTING MONEY BELONGING TO TAXPAYERS AND WITH THESE METRO PLANS THERE IS NO JUSTIFICATION FOR WASTE EVEN IN THE BEST OF TIMES. LET'S GET TOGETHER AND SAVE TRANSPORT 21 WITH OUR ALTERNATIVE PLANS.
 
OTHER RAIL IDEAS 
 
AS RAIL IS VERY EXPENSIVE  WE HAVE PUT FORWARD NEW IDEAS TO KEEP COSTS DOWN AND TO INCREASE EFFICIENCY. OUR THREE-IN-ONE RAIL PLAN WILL HAVE THREE LINES OPERATING WITH PEAK TRAFFIC.
  • MEDIUM RAIL:- WHERE RAIL IS BUILT ON THE CENTRE OF A MOTORWAY SHARING COSTS (IDEAL, FOR INSTANCE, FOR THE DERRY-MONAGHAN MOTORWAY)
  • DOUBLE-UP RAIL:- WHERE EACH TRAIN CARRIES TWO LOADS.
  • ORBITAL LUAS:- THIS IS THE MOST IMPORTANT ELEMENT FOR A TRANSPORT SOLUTION FOR DUBLIN. BY LINKING UP THE LUAS LINES IN ORBITAL FASHION IN THE CITY CENTRE WE ARE CREATING THE ONE ITEM THAT IS LACKING IN DUBLIN. CLICK ON THE LINK BELOW TO SEE OUR PLANS.

 
 

FULL LUAS NETWORK

WE TRIED THIS ORBITAL SYSTEM WITH THE BUS - IT HAD SO MANY PROBLEMS IT WOULD NOT WORK. THE FACT THAT WE HAVE THE LUAS GOING IN BOTH DIRECTIONS NORTH AND SOUTH OF THE ORBITAL ROUTE MAKES IT THE IDEAL SOLUTION IN OUR PLAN. IT WILL ALSO DISPERSE THE MANY THOUSANDS THAT USE THE CITY AND TAKE THEM TO WITHIN WALKING DISTANCE OF ALL AREAS IN THE CITY CENTRE.
 
THE NEW DUBLIN BIKE SCHEME ALONG WITH WALKING WILL MAKE THIS LUAS ORBITAL EVEN MORE ATTRACTIVE. THIS ORBITAL ROUTING WILL BE IDEAL FOR TOURISM AND ALLOWS THE CITY TO BE VIEWED IN ALL WEATHER CONDITIONS. THE ORBITAL LUAS CAN ALSO BE THE BASE FOR FUTURE LUAS LINES INTO DUBLIN. DUBLIN IS VERY FORTUNATE WITH ITS LAND BANK IN ORBITAL FASHION FROM SANYFORD   TO THE AIRPORT VIA TALLAGHT, CITYWEST, BALDONNEL, INTEL AND BLANCHARDSTOWN, MIRRORING THE M50. ITS LOCATION IS IN THE CENTRE OF THE GREATER DUBLIN AREA THAT INCLUDES WICKLOW, KILDARE, MEATH AND LOUTH. THIS GREAT ASSET HAS NO DIRECT ROAD OR TRANSPORT LINK.

TECHNOLOGY:- 

THE ADVANCES IN TECHNOLOGIES MAKE IT POSSIBLE FOR BUSINESSES TO LOCATE IN MORE THAN ONE LOCATION AND MAKE BETTER USE OF AVAILABLE LAND IN THESE AREAS.

STREET DIGGING:-

WE CANNOT KEEP CONTINUING TO DIG UP OUR STREETS FOR THE NEXT SEVERAL DECADES AS WOULD BE REQUIRED WITH THE PRESENT PLANS. THIS UNDERMINES BUSINESSES AND WILL LEAD TO MANY GOING OUT OF BUSINESS ALTOGETHER. IT IT CAN BE AVOIDED OR MINIMISED, THEN IT SHOULD BE..

CHARACTER OF DUBLIN:-

SOME OF OUR PLANNERS WANT TO RADICALLY CHANGE THE CHARACTER OF DUBLIN BY MOVING THE WHOLE TRANSPORT HUB TO ST. STEPHEN'S GREEN WHEN, ALTERNATIVELY, THERE IS AN ABUNDANCE OF TRANSPORT FACILITIES IN THE DOCKLANDS AREA. CHANGING THE CHARACTER OF THE ST. STEPHENS GREEN AREA BY DIGGING IT UP TO OVER-SERVICE THIS AREA MAKES VERY LITTLE SENSE.

WHY ARE WE OPPOSING:-

WE ARE NOT OPPOSED TO A TRANSPORT PLAN PER SE. HOWEVER, WHEN WE SEE SUCH A ONE-SIDED PLAN THAT IS SO COSTLY WITH ITS MANY FLAWS AND CATERING FOR SUCH A SMALL AREA OF DUBLIN, WE HAVE NO ALTERNATIVE BUT TO PUT FORWARD OUR OWN PLAN THAT CAN BE ACHIEVED FOR A FRACTION OF THE COST AND THAT WILL INCLUDE ALL OF DUBLIN. WE ARE ALSO AVOIDING UNNECESSARY CITY DISRUPTION AND AVOIDING UNNECESSARY HIGHER DEBT, ESPECIALLY WHEN WE ARE IN SUCH DIRE FINANCIAL DIFFICULTIES. THE ONE FEAR WE HAVE IS THAT THIS PLAN THAT WE OPPOSE COULD COLLAPSE HALF-WAY THROUGH OR ITS HIGH COSTS COULD DELAY A FINAL SOLUTION FOR OTHER AREAS FOR MANY DECADES. THE RISKS ARE TOO HIGH AND WE MUST LOOK AT THE OTHER OPTION. EVEN WITH OUR PLAN THE AIRPORT AND NORTH DUBLIN FARE MORE THAN FAVOURABLE.

TRANSPORT 21 IS A DEVELOPER LED PLAN:-

T21 WAS PLANNED AT A TIME WHEN THE COUNTRY WAS AWASH WITH MONEY AND WASTE WAS IGNORED BY EVERYBODY. THIS COUNTRY REACHED THE TOP THREE IN THE WORLD WITHOUT ANY OF THIS INFRASTRUCTURE OR OUR NEW MAJOR ROAD NETWORKS. WE HAVE GREAT ROADS BUT IT DID NOT SAVE US.

JOBS:-

BUILDING A SYSTEM OVERGROUND WILL CREATE EVEN MORE (LOCAL) JOBS AND WILL BENEFIT A BIGGER AREA. OUR CITY COULD LOSE MANY JOBS IF THERE ARE MAJOR DISRUPTIONS OF THIS MAGNITUDE. WE KNOW THAT IN TIME OUR CITY WILL RECOVER (PERHAPS MANY YEARS?). BUT WHY SACRIFICE THE PRESENT AND THE FUTURE GENERATION IF IT CAN BE AVOIDED?
